Actor Ankita Lokhande became one of the biggest television stars in the country after her show Pavitra Rishta became a hit, and the logical next step for her was to explore the world of films. Her boyfriend at the time, the late actor Sushant Singh Rajput, was successfully transitioning to the big screen, and Ankita had her own share of opportunities come her way. But she chose to prioritise her relationship over work, and let go of many such opportunities.

One of the most high-profile films that came her way was Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani, which she turned down because she wanted to get married. In a new interview with ETimes, the actor looked back on her decision, and said that she doesn’t regret it. Ankita said that she can be ‘sad’ about having made the ‘wrong decision’, but she chooses not to be regretful because she made the decisions willingly. But she admitted that she’d made ‘wrong decisions’ at the time, and said that she’d want to work hard to get back in a position where she’s offered such work. Ankita said that she is living her ‘dream life’ currently with husband Vicky Jain so she isn’t upset about how her career has panned out.
Ankita had provided more details about the Bajirao Mastani episode in an earlier interview with Bollywood Bubble. She’d said, “I remember Sanjay sir called me and said, ‘Kar le Bajirao varna yaad rakh, pachtayegi tu (Do Bajirao Mastani or you else you will regret it later).’ He was literally praising me and Sanjay sir saying that is a very big thing. Then I was like, ‘Nahi sir, mujhe shaadi karni hai (No, sir. I want to get married).’ I still remember that and he did not have anything to say.”
Ankita was also approached for a role in Farah Khan’s Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Happy New Year, but ended up not taking it on for similar reasons. “I have no regrets. To be honest, as my priority was something else back then. Also, I did not know how to balance career and personal life. Now I do and I keep telling everyone that you should know how to maintain both well separately,” she had told Bollywood Bubble. Sushant had also spoken about this in a 2014 interview with Filmfare, and had said that Ankita was in talks for the film, but things didn’t work out.
