In a review of primary agriculture credit societies (PACS) operating in the state, the Gujarat government on Thursday directed the removal of over 3.78 lakh deceased members from the cooperatives.
Minister of State for Cooperation Jagdish Vishwa-karma chaired the review meeting at Gujarat State Cooperative Marketing Federation Limited office in Gandhinagar.
Speaking to mediapersons after the meeting, Vishwakarma said, “It has come to our notice that there are over 3.78 lakh deceased members in these cooperatives. So far, we have been able to remove the names of 1.51 lakh such members. This is being done to prevent bogus voting during the elections (for the cooperative bodies) and to ensure smooth functioning.”

According to NABARD, there are over 9,900 PACS in Gujarat alone. Without divulging any numbers, the minister said efforts were also being made by the ministry to revive sick cooperative units. A release circulated later mentioned that the registration of the cooperatives, which cannot be revived, will be removed.
Other issues that were discussed during the review meeting included computerisation of all PACS, creation of a national database and digitalisation of the registrar’s office.
“The idea is to ensure that PACS do not remain limited to agriculture and related activities. It should assume a multi-purpose role where it can give away gas connections or petrol pumps or permissions to set up Jan Aushadi Kendras, among others,” Vishwakarma said.
