Install CCTVs, deploy guards during festivals: Kolkata cops to jewellers | Kolkata News

In the wake of two incidents of robbery in Nadia and Purulia districts on Tuesday, the Kolkata Police have issued an advisory for jewellers asking them to install high-quality CCTV cameras inside and outside their shops and deploy guards even when they are closed for days during the festive season.

No customer wearing a helmet, mask or with their faces covered should be allowed to enter a shop, the advisory added. “We have issued an advisory and a meeting will be held with jewellery shop owners in Lalbazar next week,” said a senior police official.

“The backup of the CCTV camera should be in cloud-based storage or at a secured or hidden place so the footage is still available even if the local DVR is damaged. It is important to ensure round-the-clock real-time monitoring of CCTV cameras that should be placed at strategic locations,” the advisory read.

The police said they have also advised the jewellery shop owners to appoint guards with valid arms licences and functional weapons.

It has also been suggested that the entry gate of jewellery shops should be kept closed with a two-tier security system wherein a security guard deployed outside will frisk a customer before sending him inside.

A security guard (preferably a gunman) deployed inside will allow the person entry only after getting a green signal from the other guard. “The antecedents of employees working in such shops must be verified at the time of employment as well as from time to time,” said an official.
