A special court in Jaipur on Friday granted bail to Farhad Mohammad alias Babla, one of the nine men, arrested by the NIA in connection with the murder of Udaipur-based tailor Kanhaiya Lal. The NIA has chargesheeted Farhad under sections of the Arms Act.
Kanhaiya Lal was murdered last year for allegedly sharing a social media post on the Prophet made by former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma. Two other people, both Pakistani nationals, have also been chargesheeted by the NIA and are yet to be arrested.
“Farhad had nothing to do with the murder of Kanhaiya Lal. My client’s family is engaged in the business of Meenakari work as artisans and they decorative items and showpieces. The NIA had arrested and chargesheeted him following the recovery of a sword from his house. Farhad had bought the sword from a khadi mela long back.,” said advocate Akhil Chaudhary, the counsel for Farhad.
“Forensic report suggested that it was a blunt sword. We had applied for bail as he had been lodged in a high-security jail with hardcore criminals for over a year despite not being charged under UAPA. So, the court granted him bail,” added advocate Chaudhary.

Special Public Prosecutor TP Sharma, appearing for the NIA, opposed the bail application, citing the recovery of the sword and said he had participated in a protest rally held against Sharma’s comments on the Prophet and had chanted provocative slogans.
However, Farhad’s counsel said his client had attended the protest that was peaceful and was not leading it.
In the bail order of Friday, the court said that the prosecution didn’t mention the use of the sword in murder or hurt.
