A man accused of stabbing a 19-year-old Dalit woman and dumping her in a canal, thinking she was dead, and his elder brother were arrested on Tuesday in Uttar Pradesh’s Sultanpur after they allegedly opened fire on a police team.
The police identified the accused as Gayasujama Khan and his elder brother Afroz Khan and said that both of them had a criminal record. The brothers were arrested on attempt to murder charges, among others.
An FIR was lodged against Gayasujama at Dhanpatganj police station by the family of Savita, who alleged that he stabbed her in the neck and threw her into a canal. Savita is undergoing treatment at a district hospital in Sultanpur and her health condition is said to be critical.
The police suspect that Gayasujama and Savita, a resident of Baldirai area of Sultanpur, were in a relationship. On Monday, Savita, who works in a private firm in Delhi, came to Sultanpur and the duo roamed the city. After she informed him that her parents had fixed her marriage, Gayasujama took Savita to a canal at Dhanpatganj, the police said.
“Gayasujama hit Savita on her neck with the knife and then threw her in a canal suspecting she had died. The woman was alive and she stepped out of the canal later,” said Ramesh, circle officer, Sultanpur. “We are yet to record the victim’s statement to know the sequence of events. Savita has deep injuries on her neck,” he added.
After the locals spotted Savita, they informed the police, who rushed her to the district hospital.

Acting on information about Gayasujama’s presence near his house in Baldirai locality, the police gheraoed the area, Ramesh said. “Assailants opened fire on seeing the police team. In retaliation, the police also fired and Gayasujama and Afroz were injured. Afroz also fired on the police team,” said Ramesh, adding that they recovered weapons from the accused.
While Gayasujama and Afroz suffered bullet injuries on their legs during the cross-firing, no police officials were injured. The brothers have been sent to a hospital for treatment, the police said.
Gayasujama is a history-sheeter with six cases, including murder, lodged against him in Sultanpur and Ayodhya districts. Afroz has been booked in four cases. Gayasujama was in Mumbai for the last few months, the police said.
