It was a dream come true for Dr Ritaben Phulwala, principal of P H Bachkaniwala Vidhyamandir school at the Khatodara area in Surat, when she was informed on a call last week that she was selected for the National Award to Teachers 2023.

With an experience of over three decades, the 58-year-old has been working at the same school since 1991, which she joined as a teacher. The recognition comes ahead of her retirement in October.

“I joined the same school (PH Bachkaniwala Vidhyamandir) as a teacher in 1991… Since 1996, I have been holding the post of principal of the school of secondary and higher secondary sections. There are a total of 1,000 students studying in our school from nursery to Class XII,” she said. “From Gujarat, 96 teachers and principals had applied for the award,” she added.
