It was a dream come true for Dr Ritaben Phulwala, principal of P H Bachkaniwala Vidhyamandir school at the Khatodara area in Surat, when she was informed on a call last week that she was selected for the National Award to Teachers 2023.
With an experience of over three decades, the 58-year-old has been working at the same school since 1991, which she joined as a teacher. The recognition comes ahead of her retirement in October.
“I joined the same school (PH Bachkaniwala Vidhyamandir) as a teacher in 1991… Since 1996, I have been holding the post of principal of the school of secondary and higher secondary sections. There are a total of 1,000 students studying in our school from nursery to Class XII,” she said. “From Gujarat, 96 teachers and principals had applied for the award,” she added.

“I will be retiring in October from the school. Getting an award at this stage can’t be expressed in words. I am on the seventh sky.”
Along with teaching, Phulwala has been associated with several non-government organisations in the city. She has been involved in integrating technology into the delivery of education, conducting leadership programmes among students and teachers among other academic activities during her service of 33 years.
Phulwala also got the ‘Best Principal’ award from the state government in 2013.
