While the film is inching closer to the Rs 600-crore mark in worldwide earnings, the makers of Rajinikanth-starrer Jailer have just announced its upcoming online premiere. This decision follows the recent online leak of the movie’s HD print, possibly leading the Jailer team to opt for an early OTT release, even before completing a full month in cinema halls.
Starting September 7, the film will be available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video, coinciding with the release of Atlee’s Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Jawan. Prime Video will offer the film in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi languages.
In a social media post, the streaming giant noted: “Jailer’s in town, it’s time to activate vigilant mode! 🔒🚨”
Though the film’s box office numbers have started to decline, the Nelson Dilipkumar directorial continues to perform better than the majority of films released this year. Following an impressive first week and a solid second week, Jailer concluded its third week in theatres on a decent note by earning Rs 29.43 crore in nett revenue from the domestic market, according to industry tracker Sacnilk.
Jailer worldwide box office revenue Rs 572.8 crore
On Friday which marked its 23rd day of theatrical run, Jailer recorded its nett earnings as Rs 1.60 crore in India. Sacnilk has also forecasted that the movie is likely to witness better business on Saturday and rake in approximately Rs 2.22 crore. The movie has so far amassed a total worldwide box office revenue of Rs 572.8 crore, comprising an India gross of Rs 381.8 crore and an additional Rs 191 crore from overseas markets.
Currently, the only movie standing between Jailer and the title of the “highest-grossing Tamil film of all time” is S Shankar’s science-fantasy action film 2.0 (2018), which also starred Rajinikanth. According to Sacnilk, 2.0 amassed a global box office collection of Rs 723.30 crore during its theatrical run.
Jailer had earlier surpassed the total collection of Mani Ratnam’s epic historical action movie, Ponniyin Selvan: I, which earned Rs 488.36 crore during its entire run.
Recently, following the historic success of the actioner, Sun Pictures owner Kalanithi Maran, who bankrolled the film, met Superstar Rajinikanth at his residence and handed over a cheque to him. The amount given to Rajinikanth has not been disclosed. However, it is said to be Rajini’s share of the profits of the film.

Apart from the cheque, Maran brought multiple models of BMW cars to Rajinikanth. Maran asked ‘Superstar’ to choose one among the options, and Rajini went with BMW X7.
Jailer features Mohanlal, Shivarajkumar and Jackie Shroff in important cameos. The action-packed entertainer also stars Priyanka Mohan, Tamannaah Bhatia, Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Vasanth Ravi and Vinayakan.
Pointing out that Rajinikanth and Nelson Dilipkumar rediscovered the alchemy of a good masala film with Jailer, The Indian Express’ Kirubhakar Purushothaman wrote in his review of the film: “Jailer is Rajinikanth’s version of Kamal Haasan’s Vikram, but with a twist. Saying that doesn’t take away anything from this fun-filled entertainer.”
