Serial offender among 10 held for raping two sisters in Raipur | India News

Police in Chhattisgarh’s Raipur district on Friday arrested 10 men for allegedly gangraping two sisters, including a minor, as they were returning home on Raksha Bandhan.

Police said one of the arrested men is an accused in five previous criminal cases and had been released on bail just three weeks ago in another rape case.

Police said the incident took place late on Thursday night when the sisters were returning home on a bike with the elder one’s fiance.

They said the three were first robbed of cash and mobile phones before the accused took the sisters to a secluded place and took turns raping them.

“Three men stopped the bike. At first, they (the sisters and the fiance) felt it was just a robbery… but the men called seven others to the spot… they thrashed the male friend and took the girls to a secluded spot where all the 10 accused took turns to rape the two girls,” said a police officer.

Soon after the incident, police said, the sisters rushed to the nearest police station where an FIR was lodged.

Raipur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Prashant Agrawal told The Indian Express the police “formed seven teams each headed by a senior officer” to nab the accused.

“The men had used four bikes and the victims managed to memorise the registration number of one of the bikes. Based on this and some more description provided by victims we traced the accused. Three of them were traced to a railway station before they could escape,” Agrawal said.

The accused were booked under Sections 392 (robbery) 376 D (gang rape), 376 DA (gang rape on woman under sixteen years of age) of the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. They will be produced before a court Saturday.

According to the police, the accused who was out on bail in a previous rape case, is the son of a local BJP functionary.

The BJP accused the police of politicising the issue.

“The accused is not from BJP. The police are politicising the issue in order to hide their failure in preventing such crimes even though one of the accused is a habitual offender who recently got out on bail,” said Anurag Agrawal of Chhattisgarh BJP’s media cell.
