Teachers Day event: Physics teacher who employs storytelling, govt teacher batting for menstrual awareness to be felicitated by President | Delhi News

A Physics teacher at a private school who incorporates storytelling into lessons, and an English teacher who has contributed towards spreading awareness on menstrual health among students in her government school will receive the National Teachers Award on September 5, which is celebrated as Teachers’ Day, by President Droupadi Murmu.

Ritika Anand and Arti Qanungo, both 44, will be the only two Delhi teachers among around 50 teachers across the country who will be felicitated at an event at Vigyan Bhawan on Tuesday.

Anand, the Physics teacher and the Vice Principal of St Mark’s Senior Secondary Public School, Meera Bagh, and Qanungo, the English teacher at Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya in Laxmi Nagar, have more than two decades of experience in teaching administration and management of school activities.

Anand, who has been associated with the same school all her career, said she has made extensive use of theatre to teach children with special needs and has contributed to implementing special education, mental health, and counselling programmes for children.

Anand has also contributed to education portals such as Kishore Manch, NCERT e-vidya, DIKSHA, Swayam Prabha, and NIOS Mukta Vidya Vani as a subject matter expert. Anand said she strongly believes in storytelling, toy-based pedagogy, and art integration in teaching physics in her classroom, adding she regularly creates infographics, scripts, toy games, and storyboards for children.

Earlier, Anand received the CBSE award for excellence in school teaching and leadership in 2021, and Delhi State Teachers’ Award 2022.

“The nine months during which I pursued my B Ed at Delhi University were quite transformative. The faculty members at the university were very inspiring. Although I was initially quite reluctant about the world I was getting into, when I started teaching, I realised that I actually wanted to become a teache…. this was the place I knew I wanted to be at all through my life,” said Anand, whose family hails from Jalandhar. After completing her initial education in Delhi, she joined DU’s Hansraj College before enrolling in the B Ed course.

On why theatre remains one of her favourite forms of expression, she said, “ Theatre is something I feel very passionate about because it is the king of all performing arts and also works as therapy. If a student is struggling to develop social and emotional skills, I think education through theatre is the best remedy,” Anand added.

Qanungo, who began her career in MCD schools in 2001 before moving to a Delhi government school in 2010, believes that, “for any problem, there is just one solution and that is education.”

She did her teacher’s training at the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Keshavpuram. A few years back, she was nominated as a finalist for a global teacher’s prize. “It gave me the platform to speak about the education system in India and discuss the educational challenges across the world,” she said.

On her work on menstrual hygiene, she said, “I realised that I have to teach my students to be aware of their own bodies. I held workshops to teach them more about how menstruation and hygiene work.”
