Twinkle Khanna was raised in an unconventional household where she spent her formative years with her mother, veteran actor Dimple Kapadia. Dimple and late actor Rajesh Khanna were separated, but not divorced, and so Twinkle grew up largely in the shadow of her mother who was extremely protective. In a recent chat on Tweak India, Twinkle shared that when Akshay Kumar shared with Dimple that he wants to marry Twinkle, her mother said that they should live-in together for two years before tying the knot.
The conversation came up as Masaba Gupta was sharing that her mother Neena Gupta did not allow her to live-in with her ex-husband. Twinkle shared that her mother had the exact opposite approach. Twinkle said, “When my husband said he wants to marry me, my mother said, ‘Nothing doing, you live together for two years. If you make it, then you get married.’”
Twinkle Khanna recalled Dimple Kapadia saying, “She said, ‘I have been married. I’ve seen what it’s like,’” referring to her rocky marriage with Rajesh Khanna. Twinkle also said that she often wonders how her life would have turned out if she grew up in a household where her parents lived together. “I feel that maybe be if my parents were together, would I really want to constantly keep working, doing something? I probably wouldn’t,” she said as she spoke about her mother’s ability to balance all aspects of their life single-handedly.
Twinkle spoke about other aspects of growing up with a single parent and said that since she grew up in a house that had no male figure, she was shielded from the concept of patriarchy for a long time. “I was raised largely by my mother. I would tell you that for the longest time I didn’t know that patriarchy and the patriarchal system existed because I wasn’t in the system,” she said.
Twinkle Khanna is a former actor who appeared in films like Barsaat, Baadshah and Mela.
