When Bella Hadid shared her struggle with depression and fatigue during her battle with Lyme disease | Life-style News

Supermodel Bella Hadid has revealed the extensive history of her health struggles with Lyme disease, the tick-borne illness she originally contracted back in 2012.

The 26-year-old had shared that she got a health scare after undergoing an emergency root canal surgery a year ago and developing a low-grade infection underneath the neighbouring tooth.

“Tooth update”, she had captioned the TikTok post, in which she showed off inflamed tissue around her eyes.

She urged her followers to stay on top of their health. “Please listen to your bodies my friends please!!!”, she said. “This made my Lyme flare up, which means the Lyme is attacking the places that are suffering such as my tooth, jaw, brain, spine, bones and the entire nervous system.”

According to Dr Aakashneel Bhattacharya, Consultant, Infectious Diseases and Microbiology, Paras Health, Gurugram, “While a jaw infection (also known as dental or oral infection) is not directly related to Lyme disease, any infection or illness that weakens the immune system can potentially cause a flare-up of Lyme disease symptoms.”

Along with her mother, Yolanda Hadid and brother Anwar, Bella was diagnosed with Lyme disease back in 2012. She has revealed that any kind of physical or mental change can trigger a relapse.

After her tooth extraction, she had returned to TikTok to share a follow-up post about the side-effects that have come along with the infection and her Lyme disease. She had pointed out how distraught internalising her pain left her, revealing that it left her body hating her. “Crying in the shower, pain parallel to my spine on both sides, shoulder blades and meridian track and going batsh-t emotionally,” she had written.

She had also said her health problems have taken a toll on her appearance. “You can only wonder why my face changes. That’s why I hate looking in the mirror or taking pictures. Truly want to throw up at the sign of myself constantly.”

Dr. Bhattacharya said, “In some cases, Lyme disease can cause neurological symptoms such as confusion, memory loss, difficulty concentrating, and mood changes. If you are experiencing such symptoms of Lyme disease, including those that affect mental health, it is important to seek medical attention for diagnosis and treatment.”

But amid the pain, Bella revealed one place that’s helped her find solace: the riding stables. “I am okay though. I feel better when I’m riding. I think my horses just really take my mind off the pain,” she had noted.

Previously too, she has been open about how her diagnosis led to struggles with mental health. In an interview with Vogue, she had said, “For three years while I was working, I would wake up every morning hysterical, in tears, alone.”

“Life isn’t always what it looks like on the outside, and the hardest part of this journey is to judged by the way you look instead of the way you feel,” she had said.
